Some issues can be resolved in one session; others may take several months. This depends upon the complexity of the issues we decide to address in counseling. Our emphasis will be on demonstrated success toward reaching the client’s counseling goals with special focus on short-term counseling. We will likely meet between 4 to 6 sessions and will continually review the need for further counseling briefly each session.
Most people find therapy very helpful. However, depending on the nature of the difficulty, you might experience uncomfortable emotions such as anger, fear, and frustration during the course of counseling. As your counselor, I cannot remove these feelings from you; but I will help you to work through them; or I will help you find an alternative counselor if desired.
You are free to discontinue therapy at any time. Most people remain in therapy until they have learned better methods of thinking, feeling, and/or acting regarding their difficulties. Occasionally, therapists elect to discontinue therapy. This usually happens when they feel no substantial progress is being made or other factors are interfering with their ability to help you. If therapy is discontinued prematurely, I will help you find qualified help elsewhere if desired.
Under normal circumstances everything we discuss remains confidential with the exception of suicidal intent, serious intent to hurt yourself or others, and confession of an intent to commit a crime. The State of Washington also requires that I inform you of the following information: “Counselors practicing counseling for a fee must be registered or certified with the Department of Licensing for the protection of the public health and safety. Registration of an individual with the Department does not include a recognition of a practice standard, nor necessarily implies the effectiveness of any treatment.”
